So, what's in your water? This natural curiosity is more relevant than ever, especially with recent updates from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on drinking water standards for 'forever chemicals' like PFAS, and ongoing discussions about microplastics and pharmaceuticals. A recent GlobeScan survey from April 2026 even highlighted water pollution as the top environmental concern worldwide, reflecting a collective desire for clear answers. Adding to this awareness, we've also seen widespread beach advisories this week across the United States due to elevated bacteria levels, reminding us all how interconnected water quality truly is.
So, what's in your water? Let's begin with PFAS, often called 'forever chemicals' due to their persistence in the environment. These compounds have been widely used in various products and are now a significant focus for water regulators. In May 2026, the EPA proposed modifications to the 2024 national drinking water standards for PFAS. Notably, these proposals suggest repealing limits on four specific PFAS types—GenX, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFBS—citing issues with the original regulatory procedure.
